Constructing “Russian civilisation”: A critical introduction to the <i>National Atlas of Russia</i> (publ. 2004–2008)

This paper presents a critical analysis of the Russian National Atlas (2004–2008), presentation which is based on tradition Soviet school complex atlas production, and first (and so far only) post-Soviet national atlas. Following cartography approach, this deconstructs atlas’ structure range presented maps to decode construction spatial identity imposed “cartographic silences”. The shows how texts aligns with overarching image State as strong military state, reveals colonial narratives toward its Northern Eastern peripheries.
